Tennis, October 24-6th

To All Our Tennis Friends:
Sunday Indoor Parties Starting NowAs difficult as it is, we will accept the imminence of cold weather and go indoors to Quest starting this Sunday. I will certainly miss Packanack and look forward to being there again next summer!Early Sign-UpsIt was a pleasant surprise to see many regulars return this weekend. Now that the cold season is here, it's a good idea to sign up early for your desired start time as the first hour often books up quickly.
FundraiserThere is a fundraiser for an organization called the Family Reach Foundation on Saturday, December 6th at Washington Township. Please support it if you can, as it's for a good cause. For more information, see the attachment.
Friday October 31stSince there is not a big interest for a Halloween Tennis Party, we will have a regular Friday party on October 31st.THIS WEEK'S SCHEDULERSVP at least 1 day prior to the party day you are interested in, to guarantee your spot. Let me know if you are interested in lessons or drills.
PARTY COST $40, includes play, balls and hot buffetFriday, QUEST TENNIS, 7 PM - 11 PM10 Edison Road, Mahwah 07430, 5 INDOOR hard courtsNote, we will also start going to Tiger Tennis in West Caldwell on Friday Nov 28thSaturday, BINGHAMTON Racquet Club, 8 PM - 12 AM737 River Road, Edgewater, 07420, 9 INDOOR hard courtsSunday at QUEST TENNIS, 5 PM - 8 PM10 Edison Road, Mahwah 07430, 5 INDOOR hard courts
Advanced NoticeTo make the parties run smoothly and your games meet your expectation, as much as possible, please reserve a spot ahead of time, at least one day in advance. Last minute signers may not get their expected matches.CancellationI understand the need to cancel at times. I often explain to players why it is important to call and let me know if they do not plan on coming, as there are 3 players who wait for the fourth on the court. The notice would also allow the WAIT-LISTED players a chance to play. For the weekend parties, you MUST CALL giving a notice of 4-5 hours prior to the parties start time, to avoid a cancellation charge of $20 if the problem persists.GuidelinesJust a reminder, our parties provide a fun and relaxing atmosphere, where players can have friendly competition. We simply ask attendees to follow these guidelines:1. Introduce yourselves to the new players on the court. This will make for a more wholesome experience.2. Be cordial to your partners and opponents.3. Refrain from giving instructions to anyone on the court unless they request them.4. Do not gun for the person at the net with fast and hard hitting especially in mixed doubles.LAST WEEK'S RECAP
FridayThe after-party hangout doubled the size of last week's! Some interesting stories from a New Zealander and a Canadian, now permanent US residents, comparing notes about the colonization of their native land and the origin of their flag (Canadian Maple leaf, didn't hear what was said about New Zealand) ... Long Live the Queen! One is a formidable photographer, the other just an actuary (our 4th in the Tennis Buffs group. Note, there are only 17k actuaries in the US for a population of 300 million. Who would be crazy enough to sit through a series of tests, tougher and taking more years than the CPA and brokers Series 7 exams. At least that's the view of one actuary.) Other noble professions in the group include teachers, a geologist, a fitness instructor and a golf pro.
SaturdayA regular winter player returned for the first time this week, claiming he's ready for some tennis after his vacation to Copenhagen! At the end of the party he commented - Wow there are a lot of good players [his level] today. When do they usually come? My reply - That's just it. Since this summer starting in July, a lot of newcomers discovered our group. They have become part of the new REGULAR crowd for a Saturday night. [Many just graduated college and even higher ed. Others are from NYC or out-of-towners who recently moved to the area, finding us by word of mouth, newspapers and online ads.] It's good to see this regular happy to return.
SundayA few Saturday regulars crossed over to the Sunday party, challenging our British player and making him quite happy. After a month of continuous play, he is now Wimbledon Ready again!
One of the players is going to the Nationals in the USTA 8.0 League this November. Congratulations to her and many other Tennis Buffs that have also gone to the regionals and the sectionals.
Speaking of interesting professions, we have our first pilot player in the group. There was too much tennis playing going on, stopping me from being able to interview him. There's always another time....Please call or email me to make reservations. The earlier you do, the more our parties will be successful.
Look forward to meeting new and old friends!
